Because of your concern...I no longer can drink Coca Cola because it can remove toilet stains. I no longer drink anything out of a can because I will get sick from the rat feces and urine.

I no longer use Saran wrap in the microwave because it causes cancer.

I no longer check the coin return on pay phones because I could be pricked with a needle infected with AIDS.

I no longer use cancer-causing deodorants even though I smell like a water buffalo on a hot day

I no longer use margarine because it's one molecule away from being plastic.

I no longer go to shopping malls because someone will drug me with a perfume sample and rob me.

I no longer receive packages from UPS or FedEx since they are actually Al Qaeda in disguise.

I no longer answer the phone because someone will ask me to dial a stupid number for which I will get the phone bill from hell with calls to Jamaica, Uganda, Singapore, and Uzbekistan.

I no longer eat KFC because their chickens are actually horrible mutant freaks with no eyes or feathers.

I no longer date the opposite sex because they will take my kidneys and leave me taking a nap in a bathtub full of ice.

I no longer buy expensive cookies from Neiman Marcus since I now have their recipe.

I no longer worry about my soul because I have 363,214 angels looking out for me and St. Theresa's novena has granted my every wish.

Thanks to you, I have learned that God only answers my prayers if I forward an email to seven of my friends and make a wish within five minutes. (Geez, the BIBLE did not mention it works that way!)

I no longer have any savings because I gave it to a sick girl who is about to die in the hospital (for the 1,387,258th time).

I no longer have any money at all, but that will change once I receive the $15,000 that Microsoft and AOL are sending me for participating in their special e-mail program.

Yes, I want to thank all of you soooooooo much for looking out for me!

I will now return the favor.

I'm taking time out from my usual Web-development posts in this blog to express my sadness over Michael Jackson's passing away. I grew up in the 70's and 80's listening to MJ's songs and watching his music videos.

Among my favorite MJ's hits were Don't Stop Till You Get Enough, Billie Jean and I'm Bad.

MJ's passing away came as a shock to me. MJ was so full of life and energy.

MJ visited the Philippines twice, the first time with the Jackson 5 back in '74, and the second, as a solo artist in '96. I never got the chance to see him live but from the interviews conducted with him, he seemed like a sincere and nice person.

I remember one reported asking MJ if he had any message to the Filipino people. His answer was simple, "heal the world". I just hope that us Pinoy fans will take his message at heart.

Thank you Michael for the memories you gave to us. We will all miss you.

Google Slide Show/ RSS Feed template

I am currently working on a blog post on how to write an RSS feed for web-based slide shows from Google. The steps, though uncomplicated are quite lengthy and may take time for me to finish.

In the meantime I have uploaded guide-files to my website: a sample HTML that uses the Google slide show and the corresponding RSS feed.

The 7 steps of embedding youtube videos in Joomla!

One of my favorite movie titles from way back was "The 7 Steps of Shaolin". I didn't get to see the movie, but I sure was amused by the title. I suppose the plot would have been a novice undergoing 7 intense steps to become a Shaolin Kung-Fu master.

I was playing around with Joomla! 1.5 when I chanced upon an online tutorial on how to embed youtube video in Joomla! However, the tutorial is only applicable for the previous Joomla! version (1.x).

After much tinkering around, I finally discovered how to place youtube videos in Joomla! 1.5 articles. I've summarized them in 7 easy steps to show you on how to do this:

Step 1: Browse the youtube website for the video you want to embed.

Step 2: Look for the Embed field box, and highlight the entire text

Step 3: Copy the Embed text:

Step 4: Login to the administration of your Joomla! website, and view the article list (Pull down the Content menu and select Article Manager). Click to edit the article where the youtube video will play.

Step 5: The editor for the article is displayed. Click the "Edit HTML Source". (Note: I've set the Display on Front Page to "yes").

Step 6: The HTML Source Editor for the article is displayed. Now paste the copied Embed text from youtube, and click the Update button, found at the bottom of the editor.
Step 7: We are now back at the article editor. The final step, click "Save" button.

That completes the 7 steps! We are now ready to view the video on the Joomla! website. As we browse the website, we see the youtube video, ready to play. Enjoy watching ^------^

Using the AJAX Slide Show

The AJAX slide show from Google is quite a useful utility in creating a running photo gallery for web pages. Its all a matter of incorporating the AJAX code into HTML pages. Google provided a "Hello World" sample code to assist novices like me get started with it.

I had intended to use the slide show for the website I am doing for my friend. The slide show is a good idea to showcase the products his business is marketing. A sample page on the website was first created.

The "Hello World" code was copied/pasted into the sample web-page. The code the be found on this link: http://www.google.com/uds/solutions/slideshow/reference.html#hello-world.

The nest step I took was to create a Media RSS for the products of my friend is marketing. The link to the Media RSS I created is http://www.liaredle.com/prodset10.rss.

The RSS will be used by the slide show as reference to the the pictures to display on the slide show. With the RSS in place, I referred to the part of the code that read,

After evaluating the code, I replaced the code-line that read 'var samples = "http://dlc0421.googlepages.com/gfss.rss";' with the code-line that refers to the RSS 'var samples = "http://www.liaredle.com/prodset10.rss";'.

The code snippet is now updated to:

And that's how simple it is. In about less than an hour, I have created an impressive AJAX-based slide show, thanks to Google.

Hopefully, the slide show will mean more profits for my friend ^_____^

Validate your site!

As a web-developer, I've recently adopted the habit of making sure that the websites I'm working on adheres to web standards set by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

So why adhere to web-standards? I mean I can create websites that don't adhere to web-standards, and still it will run (at least on the World Wide Web browsers, it will).

However, websites that comply to web-standards comes with substantial advantages. For one, I'm starting to discover that standards-compliant websites I create for my clients tend to have better structure. This allows the websites to run on special browsers for disabled persons.

This will come in handy in the event my client decides to transact business with the US Government. One of the mandates set by Section 508 by the US Legislation is that the website of any company doing business with any US Government agency must be accessible by the disabled.

One practice I have adopted lately is incorporating the validation links on the websites I create. The links checks if the website completely adheres to web-standards by cross-referencing it on the W3C validation sites and can be added via the tags below:

Life would be too boring if one were to live it too seriously. I suppose the same thing applies to blogging- that is, blogging would be too boring if all bloggers were to post only serious matters.

To break out of the monotony of life's seriousness, I decided to come up with a funny blog. I've invented a company named Scamway, who's business is to, well, scam people. Its more of a spoof of how people get duped. Scamway also has a mascot named Scammie the Monkey. The link is at http://scamway.frontpeers.com/.

The purpose of the Scamway blog is not to make fun of people getting scammed, but rather come up with inane situations where folks get scammed.

At the end, I can only hope that visitors can find some amusement in the Scamway blog, and perhaps even laugh at some of the post.

4D SQL v.11 Seminar

Last March 12, I attended the launching of 4D SQL v11. I consider myself a long-time developer of 4D, having used extensively it for the last 15 years. I am presently using 4D v6 and 4D v2004 for a couple of clients. But unfortunately I have never tried out the last release, 4D SQL v.11.

The launching was a good opportunity for me to see what 4D SQL v.11 was all about. The product presentation of 4D did not disappoint me at all. On the contrary, I got impressed how 4D had migrated its product to the enterpise level, while retaining the interface of a desktop development application.

The launching was more than just a showcase of the power of 4D. I got to meet the new generation of 4D developers, and was impressed by their skill-level in the product.

If I were to compare myself when I was starting out in 4D to the new upstart developers, I would say that the new generation have more in-depth knowledge and understanding of the product.

This broke my heart....

I was driving home when I had to stop owing to the red traffic light. I was to turn left going to EDSA from Shaw boulevard, headed in the south direction, and was just a few cars away from the intersection. Since I wanted to save up on gas, I turned off my aircon and rolled down my side windows. (OK lang naman since it was evening and quite cool anyway :-) )

It was then that I saw a street child selling Sampaguita flowers to the cars in front of me. I was taken with so much pity that I decided to buy one from her as she approached me.

Seeing her endure car smogs and put herself at risk just to sell flowers made me a bit guilty into being born into a life of privilege. I was born into a good family, got good education, now have a good work and even able to drive my own car.

As the street child approached my car, I bought one of her Sampaguitas for P10. Somehow, I had wished that I could have bought all Sampaguitas she was selling. After handing her the money, she was thoughtful enough to say thank you.

One of her companion approached me and begged me to buy also one of her Sampaguitas. As I did not have enough loose change to buy another, I simply gave her my remaining loose change, amounting to a measly P7.

What she said kinda touched my heart, "Salamat po kuya, mag-iingat po kayo ha".

Words could not describe how touched I was. Somehow I felt guilty for not reaching out for my wallet so I can buy Sampaguita from her.

Words could also not describe the guilt feelings I had at that moment; for you see, I make it a habit to curse at life's every smallest inconvenience. And yet, there are street children enduring society's injustice just to make a living.

Just as the street child left me after saying thanks, the traffic light turned to green. From my side mirror, I saw both street children vendors seated at the pavement, tired and perhaps hungry, waiting for the traffic light to turn red so that they can sell their Sampaguitas.

That broke my heart...

The Cardigans - Rise and Shine

Probably one of the best memories the 90s gave me is the song Rise and Shine from the Cardigans, which got heavy airplay from local stations NU Rock 107 and LA Rock 105 back in '96.

Rise and Shine is a cut from the Cardigans first CD album, Life. One of the CD tracks is the bands cover of the Black Sabbath song, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.

The CD was never released locally, but I had the good fortune of borrowing a copy from an officemate who bought it abroad. Much as I loved the song, I decided not rip it in mp3 format for a pirated copy.

So I did what the only thing I can do with the borrowed CD: listen to the song over and over again before returning it... :-)

The Cardigans' Rise and Shine may not have a prominent place in rock music history as say, the Beatles Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band or the Sex Pistols Anarchy in the UK but I'd like to think that the song's significance is that it came at the second half of the 90s when bands like Hootie & the Blowfish, Jars of Clay, and the New Radicals were shifting rock music from anger and despair grunge theme to positive themed alternative format.

Just now, I got the pleasant surprise of my life when I stumbled on the video of the song in youtube.com. Its kinda funny that I never really got to watch the video all these years.
